ARTHRITIS TREATMENT

ARTHRITIS TREATMENT

This is a term which applies to several diseases of the joints, the three most common of which are rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and gout. As these are degenerative diseases the pain tends to creep up slowly and it is easy to say to oneself, 'It's a little bit worse today without thinking that tomorrow it's going to be unbearable.

Aromatherapy provides one of the most effective treatments for arthritis, not only in retaining the mobility of the joints but in giving pain relief and helping to ease inflammation and swellings. In all cases of arthritis, however, the first area of attack must be diet which, when changed, can in some patients completely transform their condition.

Diet

In many cases dietary changes stop arthritis in its tracks. You may be one of the lucky ones whose arthritis is the result of a food allergy. But there is only one way to find out - and that, unfortunately, means cutting out a lot of goodies. The following regime must be carried on for at least six weeks, longer if you can. In some people a crippling effect can be felt just half an hour after eating the guilty food, in others it may be weeks afterwards.

Cut all the following from your diet:

  • Red meat, including pork;

  • Alcohol;

  • Tea,

  • Coffee;

  • Dairy products;

  • All sugar;

  • Refined flour and products (biscuits, cakes, white bread);

  • Chocolate and drinking chocolate;

  • Fried foods, including stir-fried;

  • Peanuts;

  • Lemons,

  • Grapefruit,

  • Oranges,

  • Limes;

  • Gravy;

  • Root vegetables including potatoes;

  • Tomatoes;

  • And all preservatives and additives including natural ones.

You may eat

  • Lots of fish,

  • Including tinned;

  • Plenty of green vegetables;

  • Salads;

  • Pulses;

  • Nuts;

  • Seeds, such as sunflower and pumpkin;

  • Wholemeal bread;

  • Chicken;

  • Grapes,

  • Apricots

  • Peaches.

  • Drink filtered or bottled water,

  • Dandelion coffee and

  • Herbal teas.

Simple meals can be made quite quickly without dipping into the deep-freeze department at your local shop. Try spinach with a poached egg on top with wholemeal toast, or poached cod with herbs served with steamed broccoli and green beans. A large tuna salad mixed with all your favourite allowed ingredients is a good stand-by. And chicken stuffed with chestnut and wholemeal bread stuffing makes a healthy alternative to roast beef, Yorkshire pudding and roast potatoes covered in lashings of gravy. If you really crave something sweet, drink a cup of hot water in which you have dissolved a teaspoon of honey.

Cod-liver oil is also beneficial. Take at least a dessertspoon with 5 drops of evening primrose oil or borage seed oil added; this can be taken in milk or orange juice, and should be sipped slowly. If you are allergic to cod-liver oil, substitute halibut oil. For the first two weeks, treatment is the same for all types of arthritis, including gout. This concentrates on detoxification, and takes the form of daily baths. To each bath add two handfuls of Epsom salts and one of rock salt, then add 4 drops of the following synergistic blend:

ARTHRITIS STAGE 1 BATH SYNERGISTIC BLEND

  • Fennel 30 drops

  • Cypress 16 drops

  • Juniper 10 drops

These quantities are enough for fourteen days.

During the two-week period of the preliminary bath treatment, toxins in the form of crystalline substances are dissolved by the body and passed out through the urine and faeces. Do not follow any other treatments during this time, even those using essential oils. After this two-week period the different forms of arthritis are treated individually.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Whatever the cause, rheumatoid arthritis is extremely painful. It is caused by inflammation of the fibrous connective tissue around joints- usually the wrists and knuckles, although any joint may be affected.

It can lead to deformity and loss of mobility in the joints. It is easy to recognise by the shiny tight skin around and over the affected areas, swelling around the joints and stiffness in the poor sufferer's hands, feet and limbs.

Treatment is in three stages, the first of which has already been described above, which lasts for two weeks. The next two stages also take two weeks each, and throughout the total six-week period you should continue with the diet outlined previously.

RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS STAGE 2 ESSENTIAL OILS

Chamomile, Roman, Chamomile, German, Lavender, Yarrow, Peppermint, Niaouli, Calendula, Tagetes, Eucalyptus (all) and Angelica

As with stage one, add two handfuls of Epsom salts and one handful of rock salt to a daily bath, as well as 4 drops of the formula below:

RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS STAGE 2 BATH SYNERGISTIC BLEND

  • Chamomile German 8 drops

  • Lavender 10 drops

  • Peppermint 2 drops

  • Eucalyptus 8 drops

  • Lavender 7 drops

  • Frankincense 10 drops

  • Ginger 5 drops

Diluted in 30ml vegetable oil

After the six-week treatment, move on to the maintenance programme.

Osteoarthritis

This is a degenerative disease in which the cartilage wears away leaving exposed bone and causing the formation of rough bone deposits. It mainly affects the hips, knees and fingers and is often the result of over-use in earlier years. It can start innocently enough with just an ache and stiffness, but it gets progressively worse as time goes on until one day a disconcerting creaking can be heard coming from the joint. It is very important to keep the affected area in action so as not to allow immobility to set in. Stage one treatment has already been outlined; that lasts two weeks, as does stage two for which these are the essential oils:

OSTEOARTHRITIS STAGE 2 ESSENTIAL OILS

Cedarwood, Sandalwood, Pettigraine, Cypress, Pine, Ginger, Lavender, Rosemary and Black pepper

OSTEOARTHRITIS STAGE 2 BATH SYNERGISTIC BLEND

  • Pettigraine 10 drops

  • Ginger 30 drops

  • Rosemary 16 drops

Put two handfuls of Epsom salts and one handful of rock salt in the bath, then add 4 drops of the synergistic blend. These quantities are enough for fourteen baths. As well as taking a daily bath you need to apply the following formula to the affected areas twice a day:

OSTEOARTHRITIS STAGE 2 MASSAGE OIL

  • Ginger 13 drops

  • Black pepper 8 drops

  • Cedarwood 4 drops

  • Cypress 5 drops

Diluted in 30ml vegetable oil

Stage three of the treatment also lasts two weeks, and these are the essential oils:

OSTEOARTHRITIS STAGE 3 ESSENTIAL OILS

Lavender, Black pepper, Rosemary, Sandalwood, Pettigraine, Birch, Ginger, Nutmeg, Marjoram, Cypress, Pine

The baths taken during stage three should alternate daily between the formula already given for stage one and the formula below.

Again, use 4 drops per bath:

OSTEOARTHRITIS STAGE 3 BATH SYNERGISTIC BLEND

  • Black pepper 5 drops

  • Rosemary 15 drops

  • Marjoram 8 drops

These quantities are enough for seven baths.

During stage three massage only the affected joints. Alternate daily between the massage formula in stage two and the one below:

OSTEOARTHRITIS STAGE 3 MASSAGE OIL

  • Sandalwood 15 drops

  • Ginger 5 drops

  • Nutmeg 10 drops

Diluted in 30ml vegetable oil

After this six-week treatment, move on to the maintenance programme below. If your arthritis developed during or after the menopause add geranium and rose essential oils to your treatment. If your arthritis, of whatever form, gets worse during periods of stress add to your blend those oils which are helpful in combating stress - you will find relevant lists in several sections of this book.

Gout

Although it has for centuries been something of a joke, gout is actually a very serious and painful condition. The problem is caused by an over-production of uric acid which causes the precipitation of crystals and these gather around joints, often at the base of the big toe or in the fingers. Hereditary biochemical problems are much more likely to be the cause than guzzling port and Stilton. The pain of gout can be unbearable and is often accompanied by a burning sensation and swelling. It is dangerous largely because the crystals can damage the kidneys, but their effects may be experienced all over the body, from the ears to the knees and, of course, the feet. Follow the diet outlined for all arthritic conditions and take the baths and massage treätment outlined for rheumatoid arthritis. In addition to the essential oils recommended in that section, you can use the following in stages two and three:

ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL OILS FOR THE TREATMENT OF GOUT

Basil, Birch, Pine and Thym

Maintenance Programme

The treatments above for rheumatoid and osteoarthritis may be repeated when needed. In the interim periods massage as needed with one or a combination of the oils below. Also use them in the bath - 4 drops per bath.
